What Is a Lighting Busway?

Quick answer: A lighting busway is a small plug-in busway, usually rated 25 to 63 amps, that runs overhead along a ceiling and feeds lighting and small power loads through plug-in outlets spaced every half meter or so along its length. Most people meet busway for the first time as a big feeder carrying a thousand amps out of a transformer. The lighting busway is its small cousin, and in retail and warehouse work it is often the more useful product. Here is what it is, how it differs, and where it earns its keep.
What a lighting busway actually is
Picture a slim metal trunking, small enough for one installer to carry, with two to six copper conductors inside and outlet slots at regular intervals along its underside. You clip or bolt it to the ceiling structure, feed it from a distribution board, and plug tap-off units into the slots wherever a light fitting, a display, or a small machine needs power. The tap-off unit usually carries its own fuse or miniature breaker, so each outlet is protected individually. In many designs the housing is also load bearing, so the luminaires hang directly off the busway and the electrical feed and the mechanical support arrive in one product.

Notice the last row. A lighting busway is not a lesser product held to a lesser rulebook. It is a busbar trunking system under the same IEC 61439-6 standard as the big feeder stuff, just scaled down. The multi-circuit trick
The feature that sells lighting busway to consultants is the multi-circuit housing. One slim trunking can carry two or three independent circuits on separate conductor sets. A typical arrangement puts normal lighting on one circuit, emergency lighting on a second fed from a different source, and a third spare for future loads or controls. Some systems add a twisted pair for DALI or other dimming control, so the lighting control wiring travels in the same housing instead of a separate containment run. One product on the ceiling, three or four services delivered.
Where it earns its keep
Supermarkets and big-box retail are the classic case, because the layout changes constantly and every re-layout with conduit means an electrician, a cherry picker and a lot of new cable. With lighting busway, the fitter unplugs the fittings, moves them, and plugs them back in. Warehouses use it along racking aisles. Production lines use it because machines move as processes change. Exhibition halls, offices with open ceilings, car parks and schools round out the list. Anywhere the ceiling layout is a moving target, fixed wiring is a recurring cost and a busway is a one-time one.
What to check before you buy
Start with the circuit configuration: how many conductors, how many independent circuits, and whether you need a control pair. Then the mechanical load rating, in kilograms per meter, if luminaires will hang from the housing, because a run of high-bay fittings is heavier than it looks. Check the IP rating for the environment: IP54 or IP55 covers most indoor and dusty warehouse duty, but washdown areas and parking structures want more, and our IP rating guide explains the differences. Confirm the outlet spacing matches your fitting layout, the tap-off units accept the breaker size your circuits need, and the system carries IEC 61439-6 test evidence rather than just a brochure claim. Finally ask about support spacing, since even a light trunking sags on too-wide hangers.
Common mistakes
The one we see most is inrush. A circuit feeding fifty LED drivers looks gentle on paper, then the drivers' inrush current trips the upstream breaker every time the lights switch on. The fix is C or D curve breakers, or splitting the load across more circuits, and it is cheap at design stage and annoying afterwards. Second is assuming tap-off units are interchangeable between brands. They are not; every system is proprietary, so pick the manufacturer before you standardize the fittings. Third is treating the busway as decoration support: hanging signage, cable baskets and ductwork off a housing that was rated for luminaires only. The load rating is printed for a reason.
