Bus Duct vs Cable: Which Is Better for Power Distribution?

Every electrical designer hits this question sooner or later: bus duct or cable for the main feeders? Both move power from A to B. Everything else, cost, speed, flexibility, maintenance, is where they part ways. Here's an honest comparison from the contractor's side of the fence.
Installation time
Cable work is slow. You pull heavy bundles through trays, dress them, gland them, terminate every single core. A bus duct arrives in prefab lengths that get lifted and bolted together. On jobs we've seen, the duct goes in roughly 60% faster than the equivalent cable run. On a tight schedule, that difference pays for a lot of the material gap all by itself.
What happens when the building changes
This is the part people forget at the design stage and regret later. Tenants move. Production lines get shuffled. With cable, every new load means pulling a fresh run from the distribution board. With a busway, you plug a tap-off box into the duct at the closest point, often without even switching off. If your client is a factory or a commercial landlord, that's not a nice-to-have. It's the whole point.
Space
Big cable bundles need wide trays and generous bending room. A bus duct carries the same current in a fraction of the space. In a high-rise, the smaller shaft footprint alone can pay for the duct. We've seen projects reclaim an entire square meter per floor just by switching the riser to busway.
Electrical performance
Flat busbars have lower impedance than cable over long distances, so voltage drop is less of a headache on long risers. The metal housing dissipates heat well and takes fault currents better. That's not marketing talk; it's why ducts carry higher short-circuit ratings in their test reports.
The money question
Let's be fair to cable: for small loads and short runs, it's cheaper, full stop. But as the ampere rating climbs and the route gets longer, the material gap shrinks fast. Add labor, future modifications and thirty years of maintenance, and the bus duct usually ends up the cheaper option over the building's life. The mistake is comparing only the invoice on day one.
Safety and upkeep
A bus duct is a factory-built, factory-tested assembly. Every joint is accessible for thermal inspection. Cables age quietly, especially at joints, and you usually find out at the worst moment. Neither is dangerous when done properly, but the duct tells you where it hurts.
When cable still wins
Small branch circuits, short runs, underground outdoor runs, and anything under about 100A on the final leg. There's no prize for using a busway where it doesn't belong.

Use a bus duct for the backbone: main feeders, risers, anything carrying serious current over distance. Use cable for the branches at the end. Most well-designed buildings do exactly that, and yours probably should too.
